• The Mexican journalist spent one week in jail before being released on bai.

 • Ibáñez was in the country covering preparations ahead of the 2026 World Cup, where Mexico is set to face South Africa.

 • According to reports, South African authorities accused him of espionage after allegedly flying a drone in a restricted area near a Jewish school

• Initial suspicions escalated into concerns of a possible TERRORISM incident

 • Mexican diplomatic authorities, lawyers, and the Mexican Embassy are reportedly working to allow him to return to Mexico before the next court hearing.

 • Julio Ibáñez is currently under conditional release and are no longer in prison.

 • The new hearing date is now scheduled for May 28.
