Tension at the Bernabéu: Mbappé Speaks Out on His Role and Relationship with Arbeloa

Kylian Mbappé has found himself at the center of football headlines this week after making unusually candid remarks about his role under Real Madrid coach Álvaro Arbeloa. Following Madrid’s 2–0 win over Real Oviedo on Thursday, the French striker told reporters that his manager considers him the “fourth-choice forward” in the squad a comment that has sparked controversy and prompted an immediate denial from Arbeloa.

Mbappé, returning from a hamstring injury, began the match on the bench and was greeted with boos from Madrid fans when he entered in the second half. “I’m 100% fine,” he told the press. “I didn’t play because, for the coach, I’ve been the fourth striker in the squad behind Mastantuono, Vini and Gonzalo. It’s his decision, and it always has to be respected. I’m not angry; I just have to work harder to earn my place again”

The coach, however, quickly refuted the claim, insisting he never told Mbappé he was fourth in the pecking order. “I don’t have four forwards,” Arbeloa said. “I never told him that — maybe he misunderstood me. I’m the coach, and I decide who plays,” he stated in a measured but firm response to the striker’s comments.

This public exchange has emphasized the strain in Real Madrid’s dressing room. The club’s season has been marred by internal clashes, a lack of silverware, and growing frustration among supporters. Mbappé, who arrived as the team’s marquee signing, has faced criticism for perceived inconsistency and for taking a short authorized trip to Italy during his rehab — something Spanish media and some fans saw as a lapse in focus.

Despite the tension, Mbappé maintains that he is “very happy in Madrid” and has no intention of leaving. His remarks about wanting to “do better to play ahead of Vini, Gonzalo, and Mastantuono” suggest both accountability and renewed determination. Arbeloa, meanwhile, insists the situation is temporary, saying Mbappé will start in Madrid’s upcoming match at Sevilla.

This episode reveals a fragile trust between Madrid’s star player and its coach — a challenge for a club struggling to meet expectations after two trophyless seasons. Whether Mbappé’s humility and Arbeloa’s authority can coexist smoothly may determine not only Real Madrid’s immediate future but also how Mbappé’s legacy unfolds in Spain.
