Murder Allegations Resurface in Anita Among’s Troubles
As Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among faces mounting pressure over her bid to retain the Speakership, older and more serious allegations from her constituency have re-emerged.In 2021, during the heated election period in Bukedea District, reports surfaced linking violence, including murder, to political actors in the area. Among’s close associates and some district officials were reportedly arrested and charged with murder and aggravated robbery following complaints of electoral violence. President Museveni himself directed investigations into claims of malpractice, violence, and killings in the district.
Political observers and critics have long pointed to persistent allegations of deadly political rivalries in Bukedea, with some accusing Among’s camp of involvement in or sponsorship of violence to consolidate power. The issue gained fresh attention recently when former CID spokesperson Charles Twiine was summoned, detained, and later charged. While he faced formal court charges of incitement to violence and hate speech, sources indicate that during interrogation, questions reportedly centred on claims linking Speaker Among to killings in Bukedea. Twiine is said to have described Among as a “rotten human being” and the “chief sponsor of killings and violence” in the district.
These resurfacing claims add a darker layer to the current political storm surrounding Among, which has so far centred on wealth accumulation, asset probes, and shifting alliances. Whether these old murder-related allegations will be formally pursued or remain political ammunition remains to be seen.As the Speakership election of the 12th Parliament approaches on May 25, 2026, the Bukedea file — both old and new — continues to cast a long shadow over one of Uganda’s most powerful political figures.
